Middle management suddenly disappearing?

Has anyone else noticed that a few directors and senior managers in the R&D org have just quietly vanished from the directory over the last two weeks? There haven't been any company-wide announcements, and the Slack profiles just went dark without the usual 'farewell' channel post. It feels like we are in that awkward pre-layoff phase where they cut leadership layers first to 'streamline' before hitting the individual contributors. My manager is acting super twitchy during our 1:1s and keeps dodging questions about Q4 headcount planning. It’s impossible to get a straight answer out of HR. If anyone has intel on whether we’re heading for a restructuring, please drop it here. I’m currently updating my resume just in case, but I’d rather not be blindsided if the axe is actually dropping soon.

It’s definitely getting quiet in the Slack channels. I’ve noticed the same pattern in the engineering org—names just dropping off the directory without a trace. It feels like the classic 'streamline' strategy where they clean house at the top level first to make the headcount reduction look less disruptive. When management starts acting twitchy or avoids specific questions about future project scope, it usually means the restructuring plans are already locked in and they’re just waiting for the trigger date. Keep your resume updated and make sure you have backups of your non-proprietary work just in case the access gets cut overnight.

Don't panic just yet, but definitely read the room. This exact cycle has happened before at PTC during shifts in leadership strategy. When communication goes silent and the directory starts purging names, it usually signifies a change in reporting structures or a budget pivot from the higher-ups. It’s definitely uncomfortable when your manager stops giving straight answers, but focus on documenting your current contributions and closing out your active tickets. If this is part of a larger consolidation, there isn't much you can do other than keep your head down and watch for the official memo. It's likely just a chaotic reorganization period.
