Is anyone else seeing a freeze on internal transfers?

I've been looking to move teams internally for about 6 months now. My manager is supportive, and I've had a couple of informal chats with other teams, but every time it gets to the point of making it official, it gets stalled. The explanation is always 'we're evaluating headcount' or 'things are uncertain right now.' It's really frustrating because I was hoping to leverage my 5 years here to move into a more strategic role, but it feels like the doors are just shut. Anyone else experiencing this or know what's really going on with internal mobility?

Yeah, I've heard similar things across different divisions. It seems like there's a general hiring freeze, or at least a very tight grip on headcount, going on right now, even for internal moves. My guess is that with the current market and some of the ongoing strategic shifts, they're just being extra cautious about approving any new positions, even if it means keeping existing talent from moving into roles they'd be better suited for. Hang in there, hopefully things will loosen up soon.

That's rough. I actually just made an internal transfer a few months back, so it's not *completely* shut down everywhere. It took ages though, and involved a lot of persistence and going above my direct manager's head to HR. My advice? Keep pushing. Document everything, and if you have a sponsor in leadership, lean on them. Don't take 'no' or 'maybe' as a final answer, especially if your manager is supportive. Sometimes you just have to be the squeaky wheel.
