Performance improvement plans spiking in Engineering?

Has anyone else noticed a sudden uptick in PIPs or 'performance conversations' across the engineering org? Three people on my floor have disappeared in the last two weeks, and HR is being extremely tight-lipped about whether these were resignations or managed exits. It feels like they are clearing house without a formal RIF announcement to avoid the WARN act or bad press. My skip-level manager mentioned something about 'optimizing our technical footprint' during a town hall yesterday, which sent off alarm bells immediately. Given the current market, it feels like they’re trying to squeeze productivity out of the remaining headcount while quietly cutting anyone who isn't hitting aggressive KPIs. If you’re seeing the same thing in your department, please chime in. I’d rather know if the ship is sinking before the water hits my knees.

I’ve been tracking the same patterns in my department. It’s definitely not a coincidence that people are vanishing right after those vague 'optimization' comments. They’re absolutely using PIPs as a workaround to trim the headcount quietly. By framing these as individual performance issues rather than a mass layoff, they keep the optics clean and dodge the legal requirements of a WARN notice. It’s an incredibly toxic way to manage a team, and the lack of transparency is causing everyone I know to polish their resumes before they're targeted next.

Same thing over here. The atmosphere has become completely paranoid. Every time someone isn't on a Zoom call or their Slack status stays idle, the whispers start. 'Optimizing the technical footprint' is corporate speak for cutting costs while trying to avoid the bad PR that comes with a formal RIF announcement. It’s clear they're banking on attrition and forced exits to reach their numbers. Honestly, if you feel like you're under the microscope, trust your gut and start looking elsewhere immediately because this isn't going to get any better.
