Quiet departures or just summer attrition?

Is anyone else noticing the number of 'farewell' emails dropping off recently? I’ve seen three people from my immediate department leave in the last month, and none of them have been replaced. Leadership is being extremely tight-lipped during the town halls, just parroting the same 'operational efficiency' line we’ve heard since last year. It feels like we are doing a slow-motion reduction in force without the HR paperwork. I’m starting to get worried that if I don’t see a backfill announcement by next month, I’m next on the list. Anyone else in Engineering seeing the same freeze on backfills, or is it just my department?

It is definitely not just you. The 'operational efficiency' line is corporate shorthand for attrition-based downsizing. They are letting people leave without backfilling positions to shrink the headcount quietly without triggering the WARN Act or public RIF notifications. If your team is already running thin, the workload usually gets dumped on whoever is left, which just burns out the remaining staff. Start updating your resume now because they are clearly trying to hit a specific financial target by attrition alone.

I've been watching the same thing happen in my wing for months. It feels like the company is constantly pivoting while keeping everyone in the dark about the end goal. Don't wait for a backfill announcement that likely isn't coming. When leadership stops being transparent during town halls, it usually means the decision-making process has moved far above our pay grade. Look out for yourself first; if you're already feeling the pressure, it's a sign that the current trajectory isn't going to get any more comfortable anytime soon.
