Severance package - what to expect?

Hypothetically speaking, if there *were* to be layoffs, what should we expect for severance? I'm trying to get a sense of what's considered 'standard' these days. I've heard whispers of 2 weeks per year of service, but is that before or after taxes? Also, does unused PTO usually get paid out? Any insights from people who've been through this before at other companies would be greatly appreciated. Trying to be prepared, just in case. Location is Normal, IL.

I went through a layoff a few years ago at a different company, also in manufacturing. Two weeks per year of service was the base, but they also added a few extra weeks as a cushion. PTO was definitely paid out, but check your employee handbook to be sure. Severance is taxed as regular income, so plan accordingly. Keep in mind, benefits continuation is often part of the package too, so ask about COBRA and if they'll cover any of it for a while. Good luck navigating this, hope it's just a precaution!

Honestly, don't put too much stock in rumors. Layoffs are always handled differently depending on the company's financial situation and HR policies. Two weeks per year *sounds* good, but it's not a guarantee. Start documenting everything – performance reviews, any promises made by management, etc. It's better to be over-prepared than caught off guard. Also, networking internally might give you a better idea of what's actually being discussed at higher levels. Don't panic, but be vigilant.
