I’ve noticed it too. The atmosphere has definitely soured from an engineering-first culture to one governed by optics and intense scrutiny. It feels like the air was sucked out of the room once the focus shifted purely to metrics and justification. Everyone is suddenly very guarded, and the performance theater in Slack channels is exhausting. It’s hard to focus on shipping quality features when you feel like you’re constantly auditioning for your own job. Definitely not just you—it’s palpable.
That’s standard procedure when the growth targets start feeling unattainable or when leadership decides to tighten the belt. Once the memo goes out that every headcount needs to be strictly rationalized, the culture inevitably shifts toward CYA (cover your assets) mode. The performative updates in public channels are just the natural result of people realizing that silence is a risk. It’s a shame because it really kills the creative momentum, but it’s a cycle we’ve all seen before. Keep your head down and document everything, just in case.
