Feeling the squeeze: Is the 'high performance' culture turning toxic?

I’ve been reading the rumors about potential cuts, and honestly, the anxiety in the Slack channels is palpable. The performance expectations have ramped up so much in the last six months that it feels like the company is just looking for any excuse to prune the headcount without calling it a formal layoff. It’s constant pressure to justify every single line of code and every hour spent on non-billable tasks. I used to love the culture here, but lately, it feels like everyone is just watching their backs. If there actually is a RIF coming, I really hope they just rip the band-aid off instead of continuing this death-by-a-thousand-cuts 'performance management' strategy. It’s exhausting trying to keep up with impossible KPIs while waiting for the other shoe to drop. Anyone else getting that vibe, or am I just burning out?

I’ve been feeling the exact same way. It feels like the goalposts are shifting every week to justify performance plans. I used to be proud to say I worked here, but now it’s just a game of survival. We’re all exhausted, constantly documenting every task just to prove we’re pulling our weight, while the actual work suffers. The lack of transparency from leadership is making the rumors feel like reality. It’s definitely not the same place it was a year ago, and it’s hard to focus when you’re constantly wondering if you’re next on the list.

Look, I’ve been through this cycle at a few other tech firms, and it’s never just about individual performance—it’s about optics. When management starts pushing this hard on 'efficiency,' it’s usually because the numbers aren’t hitting the targets they promised investors. It’s an unfortunate reality of the current market. Keep your head down, document your wins, and update your resume. If the culture has shifted this drastically, it’s a sign that the environment is becoming unsustainable long-term. Just don't burn yourself out trying to satisfy an impossible metric.
