Anyone else noticing the travel budget freeze?

Is it just my division, or is the travel ban getting tighter across the board? Last month it was 'discretionary spend only,' now it feels like even client-facing trips are being scrutinized by three levels of management before getting a hard no. I’ve been at S&P for a few years now, and the shift in tone regarding expenses usually precedes something uglier. We had a town hall recently where they kept harping on 'operational efficiency' and 'realigning resources'—those are the classic buzzwords that keep me up at night. I’ve started updating my resume just in case, because if they’re squeezing travel this hard, payroll is definitely the next line item on the chopping block. Has anyone heard whispers of a Q3 restructuring, or am I just being paranoid?

It is definitely happening across the board. I am in a completely different division and we are seeing the exact same level of scrutiny. It is not just about the travel; it is the entire culture of 'do more with less' that has ramped up significantly over the last two quarters. When they start using the 'efficiency' buzzwords, it is almost always a precursor to a wider tightening of the belt or, worse, headcount adjustments. I would not count on any relief in the travel policy until after the fiscal year ends.

I have been here long enough to recognize the pattern. First, they clamp down on the travel budget, then they start audits on small expenses, and then comes the restructuring talk. It is incredibly frustrating when you are trying to maintain client relationships, but management seems to think everything can be handled via video calls. If your team is already facing triple-level approvals for a client meeting, the writing is on the wall. Update your resume now, because 'operational efficiency' is just the polite way of saying they are planning for a down cycle.
