Is S&P starting to trim the fat in Ratings?

Anyone else noticing the tightening on discretionary spend and travel lately? I’ve been hearing whispers from a few VPs that we’re being asked to justify every single line item in our budget for Q4. Usually, when the 'efficiency' talk starts ramping up this aggressively without a major market shift, it’s a precursor to a headcount reduction. My manager has been acting weirdly avoidant during 1:1s, specifically whenever I ask about the project pipeline for next year. Feels like the leadership is trying to clear the runway for something before the end of the year. Has anyone heard anything about involuntary reductions or are they just banking on attrition to lower the numbers for now? I’d rather know now than wait for an ominous calendar invite to appear on a Tuesday morning.

I've definitely noticed the same trend in my department. It feels like we are documenting every penny just to keep the lights on for Q4, which is a major red flag. When the 'efficiency' rhetoric picks up this quickly, it usually means the bean counters are preparing for a headcount adjustment. I’ve seen this script play out before, and it rarely ends with 'business as usual' for the staff. Start updating your resume now and keep your head down until the dust settles.

Honestly, the paranoia is probably justified. Leadership has been acting cagey for weeks, and the sudden scrutiny on discretionary spend is classic pre-layoff behavior. Every time management starts talking about 'optimizing' budgets while dodging questions about future project pipelines, you know exactly what’s coming down the pipe. It’s an exhausting environment to work in, but at least we can see the signs early enough to prepare. Don't wait for an official announcement if you suspect your role is on the chopping block.
