Is Spotify's 'focus on core business' a layoff warning?

Has anyone else noticed the increasing talk about Spotify needing to 'focus on its core business' and 'prioritize profitability'? It's been popping up in earnings calls and leadership updates. To me, that sounds like a prelude to cutting anything that isn't directly contributing to the bottom line, which usually means people. I'm not at Spotify, but I work in a related field and see these patterns. It's the same language we heard before the big rounds at other tech giants. They're talking about 'optimizing resources' and 'driving sustainable growth'. It's all very corporate-speak, but the implications are clear if you've been through it. Makes me nervous for friends who work there. Anyone have any intel on what 'core business' actually means in their context?

I've definitely heard that chatter too, and it rings alarm bells. When companies start talking about 'core business' and 'profitability' in that specific way, it often precedes a restructuring. It's a classic corporate code for 'we're going to trim the fat,' and unfortunately, employees are often the first to feel the impact. Let's hope it doesn't come to that, but the language is certainly familiar.

It's always a bit of a worry when you hear those phrases. While focusing on the core product makes sense from a business perspective, it's a delicate balance. The danger is that 'core business' can become a justification for cutting valuable initiatives or, worse, talent that might not have an immediate payoff but is crucial for future growth. It's a concerning trend across the industry.
