Honestly, 'surprise' feels like a cop-out. When you make significant cuts, especially across multiple departments, the ripple effects are pretty obvious. Morale takes a massive hit, and remaining teams are often overloaded. It's not exactly rocket science to predict that. Sounds like a classic case of prioritizing short-term financial goals over the long-term health of the workforce and the company culture.
It's hard to believe anyone in leadership would be genuinely surprised by the consequences of layoffs. The patterns are well-established in the industry. Losing experienced people inevitably impacts workflow and knowledge sharing. Maybe the 'surprise' is less about the *fact* of the impact and more about the *degree* to which it's affecting their bottom line or public perception. Still not a great look, though.
