Any truth to the rumors about Q4 performance reviews being brutal?

There is a ton of chatter in the internal Slack channels that have nothing to do with the actual work. Everyone is trying to read the tea leaves on the performance review cycle. Usually, this time of year is just standard calibration, but the atmosphere feels different—less about growth and more about ‘justification’ for headcount reduction. I've heard from a few people in Ops that they’ve been told to document every single interaction, which screams ‘building a paper trail for layoffs’ to me. Combine that with the fact that we haven't seen a clear roadmap update in months, and it’s hard not to feel like we’re all sitting on a powder keg. If you’re getting nudged into a PIP right now, just start looking elsewhere immediately. I’d rather be prepared and wrong than stay loyal to a company that seems to be struggling to keep its internal comms straight.

I’ve been through a few cycles here and the current vibe is definitely different. Usually, Q4 is about wrapping up projects and planning for the next year, but the emphasis on granular documentation feels like a major red flag. It’s no longer just about meeting goals; it’s about having a defensive folder ready at all times. If your manager is suddenly hyper-focused on 'accountability' metrics you haven’t seen before, trust your gut—the rumors about a headcount cull are likely rooted in reality.

Honestly, people are blowing this way out of proportion. Calibration happens every single year around this time, and because the macroeconomic environment is what it is, management is naturally going to be more rigorous about performance data. Expecting a company to be diligent about documenting output during a slowdown isn't proof of an impending mass layoff—it's just basic operational hygiene. Stop stressing over every Slack rumor and just focus on delivering the work you’re paid to do.
