Just got laid off - surprised and blindsided (Visa, Sr. SWE)

Well, folks, it finally happened. Got the tap on the shoulder this morning. I'm a Senior SWE in the data engineering org. No warning signs AT ALL. Performance was good, projects were on track. They cited 'economic downturn' and 'company restructuring.' Got offered 2 months severance plus accrued PTO. Honestly, I'm still in shock. Anyone else impacted today? Trying to figure out next steps, and any advice would be welcome. Is there a chance for negotiation on that severance? Feeling totally lost right now.

Sorry to hear that, OP. It's rough out there. Two months severance is fairly standard, but it's definitely worth consulting an employment lawyer to see if there's anything you can leverage for a better deal. Things like unused vacation time, stock options, or even just length of service can sometimes be used to negotiate. Don't sign anything without having it reviewed! Dust off your resume and start networking NOW. Good luck with the search!

Honestly, 'no warning signs' is rarely the full story. Companies don't usually blindside senior engineers out of the blue. Were you paying attention to the overall market? Any rumblings in your org? While severance is nice, it sounds like they really wanted you gone. Be prepared for some tough questions in future interviews about why you were let go. Spin it positively, focus on new opportunities and skills you want to develop. Don't dwell on the past.
