Post-layoff fallout: Remote vs Office reality

So, it’s been a bit since the latest round of cuts. I’ve noticed a lot of the remote roles were hit particularly hard in this cycle. It’s wild how they preach 'global workforce' and then pull the rug out from under the remote teams the second the quarterly numbers look shaky. My team is skeleton-crewed at this point. We were told to do more with less, which is the classic Wayfair playbook, but how much longer can this go on before the product actually breaks? I'm honestly exhausted. Watching talented people walk out the door every few months isn't exactly great for morale, and 'working harder' to cover for three other people's lost roles is starting to feel like a trap. For those of you who were let go—how are the severance packages holding up? Are you finding anything in this market, or is it as brutal as it looks from the outside? Just trying to gauge if I should get out now before the next round of 'trimming' hits.

The 'do more with less' mantra is exactly what’s burning everyone out. It’s not just about the headcount; it’s about the fact that they gutted the teams who actually build and maintain the site. When you push a skeleton crew to keep up with the same expectations, something eventually has to snap. I feel for you, but at this point, it feels like the company is prioritizing optics over stability. Don't set yourself on fire to keep their bottom line warm.

I've been watching the same patterns play out for years now. Leadership loves the cost savings of remote talent until the market gets tight, then it’s back to the office mandate as a cover for downsizing. The irony is that the product is already showing cracks, and management seems completely out of touch with how much technical debt is piling up while everyone is busy just trying to survive the next round of cuts. It’s a toxic cycle, and I wouldn't blame you for polishing your resume.
