What's the real story behind Zillow's latest job cuts?

Just saw the news about Zillow cutting another chunk of its workforce, around 500 this time, per HousingWire. It feels like every few months there's another round of layoffs there. I've seen the HN threads mentioning the home-flipping issues and restructuring, but honestly, it seems like more than just iBuying. I've got a friend who used to work there in product, and they always talked about internal churn and shifting priorities. Is this a sign of deeper issues in the company's strategy, or just the reality of the current real estate tech market? Curious if anyone on the inside can shed more light on what's actually happening. Trying to understand if this is a specific problem at Zillow or a broader trend we should all be watching in proptech.

It's definitely concerning to see repeated layoffs. My guess is that the iBuying debacle, while significant, exposed some underlying structural problems. The market shifts rapidly, and if a company isn't agile enough to adapt its core business model beyond just adding new features or pivoting products, then staffing cuts become an inevitable consequence. It's a tough environment for proptech right now, and Zillow's size doesn't make it immune to market forces or strategic missteps. They need to find a sustainable path forward that isn't solely reliant on acquiring and flipping homes or constantly chasing the next big thing without a solid foundation.
