Any recent performance reviews feel like a setup?

Had my performance review last week and it felt... different. Usually, it's a discussion about goals and achievements, but this time it felt more like they were building a case. Lots of focus on areas where I met expectations, but framed in a way that highlighted minor shortcomings. My manager was pretty direct, almost to the point of being harsh, about needing 'significant improvement' in certain areas that weren't even major goals this cycle. It's making me paranoid. Has anyone else experienced something similar recently, especially at Zoom? Feels like they might be laying the groundwork for something, and I'm worried about being blindsided. Trying to document everything now, but it's a crappy feeling.

That's a really unsettling experience. It's understandable why you'd feel paranoid. Performance reviews should be about growth and development, not setting someone up for a fall. Perhaps your manager is under pressure from above, or maybe there's a new directive being rolled out about performance management. Either way, the way it was handled sounds incredibly demotivating and unprofessional. I’d suggest keeping a detailed record of everything discussed, including specific examples your manager brought up, and any feedback you’ve previously received on those same areas. This documentation could be crucial if things escalate. Consider seeking advice from HR on how to navigate this situation and protect yourself professionally.
