That is the exact reality of the current landscape. We are all commuting just to sit in a cubicle and wear headphones for the exact same Zoom meetings we could have attended from home. It is beyond frustrating to waste two hours a day in traffic only to stare at a screen in a noisy office environment. The disconnect between management’s desire for 'collaboration' and the actual nature of our digital-first workflows is massive. At this point, it is clearly about control rather than actual output or team cohesion.
I have been feeling the same thing lately. My company started with the 'two days a week' pilot, but now they are tracking badge swipes and sending out passive-aggressive emails whenever the office feels quiet. It is incredibly demoralizing to spend my entire day on Zoom calls while surrounded by empty desks. If the work is getting done and the metrics are being met, why force this theater? It feels like they are intentionally making the office experience unpleasant to nudge people toward quitting on their own terms.
