The RTO mandate vs. the silence on headcount

It’s honestly insulting how much they’re pushing the 'Return to Office' hybrid mandate while keeping us in the dark about the budget. They talk about 'collaboration' and 'building culture,' but all I see is a subtle way to thin the herd without paying out severance packages. If they can make the commute miserable enough or force people who moved to 'Zoom Towns' to quit, they hit their headcount goals without an official layoff announcement. I’ve seen three senior ICs put in their two weeks in my org alone this month. Leadership won't address the attrition, they just act like these roles were 'naturally phased out.' It’s the same playbook I saw at my last company right before the big cuts hit. If you’re seeing empty desks and silence from your manager, start prepping your portfolio now. Don’t wait for the calendar invite labeled 'Check-in' to realize what’s actually happening.

It is the oldest trick in the corporate playbook. They know exactly what they are doing by masking these mandates as 'collaboration' initiatives. It is a calculated move to force resignations and avoid the bad optics of a formal RIF. Anyone who moved away for a better quality of life is now essentially being pushed toward the exit sign. I have seen the same thing happen with my own team; they are just waiting for people to get fed up and walk away on their own terms. Watch your back.

I have been tracking the patterns at my office, and the intention is painfully transparent at this point. By dragging people back in to sit on Zoom calls in a cubicle, they are intentionally eroding morale to clear the roster cheaply. It is not about culture or synergy; it is purely about the bottom line. If they wanted us to collaborate effectively, they would respect our time and the lives we built outside of the commute. They are betting on attrition to do their dirty work for them.
